2019 Acura RDX Wins Safety Award

At West Side Acura in Edmonton, we've made no secret of our admiration for the redesigned 2019 Acura RDX. After all, we get to drive it, so we know how its combination of technology and performance can set hearts racing. But now our 2019 Acura RDX review includes a new honor: a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

A Superior Rating in Every Category

In its review of the 2019 RDX, the IIHS gave Acura's luxury compact SUV its top rating of Good in all six crashworthiness tests. This includes small and moderate front overlap crashes for both driver and passenger sides, side impact crash protection, roof strength, and head restraint tests. It also ranked Superior for front crash avoidance, and for the first time it won a Good+ rating for the ease of use of its child seat anchors. The combination of all of these excellent rankings earned the RDX the Top Safety Pick+ rating, the IIHS's highest possible rating for any vehicle.

Crash Protection

The 2019 RDX features the latest iteration of Acura's proprietary Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE). This technology features a high-strength steel body structure and door stiffener rings to absorb and disperse the impact of a crash, protecting the driver and passengers. As the IIHS review put it, "The 2019 Acura RDX excelled in our six crashworthiness evaluations, including the roof strength test." In the roof test, the RDX exceeded requirements by resisting over 21,000 pounds of force. Plus, the RDX features eight airbags for the first time, including new knee airbags for the driver and front seat passenger. It all adds up to superior crash protection.

Crash Avoidance

Of course, the best crash protection is avoiding a crash in the first place. Here the RDX excelled, earning the Superior rating that pushed it over the finish line into being a Top Safety Pick+. What's the reason for this rating? Acura's active safety technology suite called AcuraWatch comes standard on every RDX trim level. AcuraWatch's driver-assist features include a Collision Mitigation Braking System, Road Departure Mitigation, Adaptive Cruise Control featuring Low-Speed Follow, Lane Departure Warning, and more. The 2019 RDX also offers optional JewelEye LED headlights for extra safety during night driving.   According to Acura Vice President and General Manager Jon Ikeda, "The 2019 Acura RDX offers the highest level of standard safety and driver-assistance features in its class, so earning class-leading safety ratings is a strong proof point of the technology and design innovation we're bringing to the game."
